3. What are Fractions?
All fractions are rational numbers. There are three different types of fractions:
Proper: 3 5
Improper:
Mixed:
When using fractions in problems, it is best to use either proper or improper…try to avoid mixed numbers whenever possible.

4. Conversions
To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction: = x4 (multiply denominator and whole number) (add total to numerator) (denominator stays the same). To convert an improper fraction into a mixed number: 14 3 = ÷3 (divide numerator by denominator) 4 r2 (answer becomes whole number; remainder becomes numerator) (denominator stays the same)

5. Fractions to Decimals
For those who prefer decimals, you can convert any fraction into a decimal by dividing (doesn’t matter if it is proper, improper, or mixed). For example… 2 5 = 0.4 2÷5 = = ÷5 = = 3.8 4÷5 = 0.8; 3 is the whole number.

6. Decimals to Fractions
To convert your decimal back into a fraction, identify how many decimal places you have and put the number over the amount of decimal places. For example… 0.4 = is in the tenths place; 4 10 = = is in the tenths place; = 14 5 𝑜𝑟 = is in the hundredths place; = You practice in notes: pg. 83, #s If you encounter mixed numbers, turn them also into improper fractions.
