Mercantilism: Nations measure power by wealth (so set up colonies to get resources, and create trade markets)

Who is John Cabot and what is his mission?
1497: England sends John Cabot to explore North Atlantic – aiming for Asia
Boat “the Mathew”
Letter’s Patent: England gives him the right to seek out, discover and find land of the heathens (non-Christians) and to subdue them and take towns (etc) that are found

What does he claim for England?
Instead of Asia, he finds “new found land” and claims it for England (despite native living there)
Finds “Grand Banks” - lots of Cod fish, and claims for England
Fisherman start to come here
