What is place? PLACE The world is made up of many different places, which have different purposes and often mean different things to people!

A place can have natural characteristics and human characteristics.
The human and natural characteristics of a place can influence our lives and life opportunities. Human and natural characteristics can influence or be influenced by each other.

What are the ‘characteristics of place’?
These characteristics of places can be grouped into either human or natural characteristics. ‘Characteristics’ can be lots of things. They can be something that you can see. For example, you can see a mountain or a building in a place. They can be something that you can touch. For example, you can touch a piece of clothing or something wooden. … or something that you can feel such as the heat on a hot day. … or something that you experience such as pride in your community.

Natural characteristics of places include:
climate soil vegetation water resources minerals landscapes The natural characteristics consist of the features surrounding us that occur naturally. They can be living or non-living.

Human characteristics of places include:
people communities cultures production built elements — buildings, roads The human characteristics of places consist of features surrounding us that are changed or created by human beings.
