2 DNA Replication Each human body cell contains 46 chromosomes.
Whenever a cell undergoes mitosis, the new cells have to also have 46 chromosomes. That is why DNA has to be replicated (copied) before the cell divides.

3 Replication Fork

4 DNA Replication Steps The DNA double helix unwinds and unzips (using enzymes) at several points to form replication forks. The two strands/chains separate. Nucleotides that are complementary to the template strand are brought and stuck together using DNA polymerase. (using base-pairing rule)

5 The result is two new DNA molecules that are identical to each other and to the original DNA molecule.
