Quantitative Observation Qualitative Observation Inference Prediction The Scientific Method Hypothesis Experiment Variable Control Controlled Experiment Independent Variable Dependent Variable Biology Organism

5 Independent Variable: The variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables that are being measured. The one thing you change. Limit to ONLY one in an experiment. EXAMPLE: The liquid used to water each plant. Dependent Variable: Factor whose value depends on the independent variable. It is what is being measured during and experiment, and is called data. EXAMPLE: The height or health of the plant. Biology: the study of life; also known as life science. Organism: things that have all the characteristics of life; made of one or more cells.

6 Example In order to test the effectiveness of a new vaccine, 50 volunteers are selected and divided into two groups. One group will be the control group and the other will be experimental group. Both groups are given a pill to take that is identical in size, shape, color, and texture. Describe the control group. Describe the experimental group. What variables are kept constant? What variable is being changed? Even though the volunteers are given identical looking pills, the control group will not actually receive the vaccine. Whether or not the pill contains the vaccine. The size, shape, color, and texture of the pill. This group will receive the vaccine.

8 There are two variables in an experiment
Independent Variable: The variable that stands alone and isn’t changed by the other variables that are being measured. The one thing you change. Limit to ONLY one in an experiment. Dependent Variable: Factor whose value depends on the independent variable. It is what is being measured during and experiment, and is called data. In the previous experiment, what is the independent variable? In the previous experiment, what is the dependent variable? It is the addition of the vaccine to the pills that were given to the volunteers. The observed health of the people receiving the pills.

9 Which people are in the control group?
What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What should Mr. Krab’s conclusion be? Why do you think 8 people in group B reported feeling better?

10 What was the initial observation? What is the independent variable?
What is the dependent variable? What should SpongeBob’s conclusion be?

11 Which person is in the control group?
What is the independent variable? What is the dependent variable? What should Larry’s Conclusion be?
