General points for essays
Grading No F’s (unless you didn’t turn it in), some D’s. Mostly B/C’s Main focus: interpreting quotes/making connections Biggest hurt: proper punctuation and grammar General points for essays Formal writing No 1st or 2nd person (I, me, you, etc.) No contractions: does not vs. doesn’t Documents/Primary source titles: italicized History essays: all past tense These particular readings: “documents,” not articles

Quotations Proper quotation punctuation: last word, quotation, citation, period Wrong: end (Jefferson)”. End.” (Jefferson). Correct: end” (Jefferson). Note: if no citation, period goes before quotation: end.” Citation comes at end: equal” (Jefferson). Ellipses only used to replace words: Wrong: He sees “…a men are created equal…” Correct: He sees “all men…equal.” Placing quotes in writing: Wrong: “All men are created equal” (Jefferson). Correct: Locke was the first thinker to say this, stating that all men have the right to “live as he pleases and not be tied to any laws” (Locke).
