Explain the organization of the Periodic Table Distinguish metal elements from nonmetal elements

3 The Periodic Table Question: What is the purpose for the periodic table? Answer: Putting elements into a certain order allows us to remember their characteristics and predict their behavior better.

4 Medeleev’s Periodic Table
Dmitri Mendeleev: first to classify elements in a logical and systematic way. Mendeleev was a Russian chemist (1834 – 1907) He put elements in order of increasing mass He predicted the physical and chemical properties of undiscovered elements.

Notice: Mendeleev predicted the masses and properties of unknown substances.

There was a problem with Medeleev’s Table No noble gasses Te and I did not match the properties of their respective columns

7 The Periodic Table Henry Moseley: first to determine the atomic number of atoms Moseley was a British physicist ( ) He rearranged the periodic table into elements according to increasing atomic number This fixed the problem with Tellurium and Iodine

8 Reading The Periodic Table
Periods – the horizontal rows Move from left to right with increasing atomic number. Periodic Law: when elements are arranged according to increasing atomic number their is a periodic repetition of their properties

Groups – the columns Also called family A number and a letter identify each group. EX: IA , IIA, IIIA, IVA, ect.

Each group of elements have similar properties Group 1A – contains H, Li, Na, etc. AKA alkali metals Has one electron in outer energy level Properties Conduct electricity well, ductile, have luster, malleable, react violently with water

Each group of elements have similar properties Group 2A – contains Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, etc. AKA alkali earth metals Has two electrons on outer energy level Group 3A – boron Has three electrons in outer energy level

Each group of elements have similar properties Group 4A – carbon family Has four electrons in outer energy level Group 5A – nitrogen family Has five electrons in outer energy level Group 6A – oxygen family Has six electrons in outer energy level

Each group of elements have similar properties Group 7A – halogens Has seven electrons in outer energy level Group 8A – noble gases Has eight electrons in outer energy level

14 Reading The Periodic Table
Group B elements Transition elements – elements like copper, gold, silver. Lanthanide and Actinide Series – made up of rare earth elements Includes uranium

Elements on the PT can be classified as: Metals Groups 1A, 2A, Group B, and post Transition Metals Metalloids Elements that touch the dark stepped line Nonmetals To the right of the metalloids
