1 What is a Narrative?

2 Definition A narrative is a text that tells a story
Narratives are usually imaginary but can be based on real life Narratives can also be known as short stories, myths, poems and fairy tales.

3 Text Structure A narrative has THREE parts
Part One- An orientation, where the setting is presented, characters are introduced and the time of the story is set Part Two- Involves the complication, which is the problem or problems the characters face Part Three- The resolution, which describes how the characters solve the problem or problems

4 Special language features
Narratives use lots of action words to describe characters thoughts and processes (for example- running, climbing, flying, looking, feeling, thinking) Narratives can be written in first person (I climbed on top the mountain, I swam at the beach, We ran towards the finish line) Narratives can also be written in third person (The king used his sword, The python slithered across the lake)
