43 Question Henry has one 9 foot board. He needs to make 4 foot shelves for his books. How many shelves can he cut from the board?

44 Answer 5 – 10 9 ÷ 4 = 2 R1 The reminder is a left over piece of board that is smaller than 4 feet look, so Henry cannot make another shelf with this small piece of wood. SO, the reminder is not used at all, making the answer 2. Henry can cut 2 shelves.

45 Question Nine students in Mr.D’s class are going on a field trip. Parents offered to drive. If each parent can drive 4 students, how many parents are needed to drive on this trip?

46 Answer 5 – 20 3 parents. 9 ÷ 4 = 2 R1 The reminder is an additional kid who hasn’t been put in a car. In order to have this student attend the trip, another parent needs to drive. So, we add 1 to the quotient of 2 which makes for 3 parent drivers.

47 Question On Monday, Makayla brought 9 apples to school. She shared them equally among herself and 3 friends. How many apples did each person get?

48 Answer 5 – 30 9 ÷ 4 = 2 R1 The 9th apple is shared among 4 people, so each person gets ¼ (25%) of that apple PLUS 2 whole ones. So the full answer is 2 R1 or 2.25

49 Question Sam bought 4 Mixels for $9.00. Each Mixel costs the same amount. How much did each Mixel cost?

50 Answer 5 – 40 9 ÷ 4 = 2 R1. The reminder is ¼ of a dollar which is 25 cents. SO each Mixel cost $2.25

51 Question Henry has 12 elder squirrels. Each squirrel has 6 acorns. They keep all of the acorns in a hole in an oak tree. One day, a young squirrel comes, eats half of the acorns, and splits the rest between himself and 2 young squirrel friends. How many acorns does each squirrel get?

52 Answer 5 – 50 12 x 6 = ÷ 2 = ÷ 3 = 12 Each squirrel gets 12 acorns and the elder squirrels are not happy about it at all.
