Presentation on theme: "Welcome – we’re going to start world issues!"— Presentation transcript:

1 Welcome – we’re going to start world issues!
For the next few weeks it’s the key to basic life: WATER

2 Learning Objectives To understand why water is so important.
2. To consider how many people do not have access to clean water and the effects of this.

3 First of all, a key term… Sanitation – drainage of human waste and used water. Kept away from drinking water supplies

4 2008 was the International Year of Sanitation…but are we reaching those targets?
The United Nations Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target for sanitation is 'to halve, by 2015, the proportion of the world’s population without sustainable access to basic sanitation.' The target is wildly off track, and at current rates of progress will not be met.

5 Why is water so important?
How long can you survive without it? Create a class mind map with all your ideas on the page called’ why is water so important?’ in your booklets

6 Let’s see what the issues are with world water…
2.6 billion people do not have a safe place to go to the toilet Millions of women and children spend hours every day walking miles to collect water 1.1 billion people lack access to clean water As many as 5000 children die every day as a result of poor sanitation

7 Watch the mini clip – what’s the key message?
Global crisis in sanitation and global water supply In short – not enough safe, clean water in the world for everyone Lots of water being contaminated from toilet, human waste – i.e. no sanitation supplies Both links = same clip Do we think this is shocking? Water-related diseases were eradicated over 150 years ago in the UK and yet still in our world today 4000 children die everyday from diarrheoa!

8 What could we do about this?
Will the MDG for 2015 work? Will there be enough safe water for everyone in the world? Brainstorm in your booklets some ideas on how the world could deal with a global water crisis? Scotland get above average rainfall. So how could they share the water with the rest of uk and make some profit? Are we wasting water? Do you waste water? How could we share water with other countries? Why might there not be enough safe water? Think climate? Think rich / poor country?
