1 The Central Nervous System

2 Phineas Gage

3 The Central Nervous System
CNS - brain & spinal cord PNS - nerves that connect spinal cord to rest of body

4 The Central Nervous System
brain & spinal cord surrounded by meninges (membrane), spinal fluid & bone (skull or vertebrae) They cushion, nourish, & protect

5 Spinal Cord - located inside vertebrae of spine
contains interneurons that control motor reflexes carries impulses between brain & PNS

6 Spinal Cord Grey Matter - nerve cell body & dendrites
White Matter - axons (usually myelinated)

7 In partners Read the article & summarize Be ready to teach another person the gist of the article Be ready to learn from another person.

8 The Brain

9 Hind Brain Three regions: Medulla (oblongata) Cerebellum Pons

10 Hind Brain Medulla -involuntary behaviour control
eg. Heart, breathing, digestion

11 Hind Brain Cerebellum -voluntary muscle sensory signal receiver
(signals about movement and balance, by muscle & joint receptors) Pons- neuron bundle that connects the cerebellum to the higher brain. Brain

12 Cerebral Cortex (cerebrum)
Cerebrum controls the sensory & motor activities. Four main sensory regions or lobes - Frontal - Parietal - Occipital - Temporal

13 Cerebral Cortex (cerebrum)
Frontal -Thinking, planning, & personality

14 Cerebral Cortex (cerebrum)
Parietal -sensory regions that register information about, touch, pain, temperature, & pressure

15

16 Cerebral Cortex (cerebrum)
Occipital -sensory regions for vision.

17 Cerebral Cortex (cerebrum)
Temporal lobe - regions for auditory sensory perception.

18 Construct a table about the parts and function of the:
- thalamus - hypothalamus - basal nuclei - blood brain barrier
