Many Americans felt they had a moral obligation to help Cuban people in their struggle for independence from Spain Spain sent Valeriano Weyler to Cuba to stop the native Cuban revolt Weyler sent many of the native Cuban revolutionaries to concentration camps He became known as “The Butcher” by the American press (yellow journalism)
