Why study government? What does the government do?

3 What is Government? Government is the institution through which a society makes and enforces its public policies. Government is made up of those people who exercise its powers, all those who have authority and control over people. More simply put, Government is a set of Institutions

4 Government/Politics Are Politics and Government the same thing?
No, Politics is the process by which a society decides how power and resources will be distributed. Within that society. Government is a set of Institutions Politics is the process these Institutions utilize

5 Public Policy What is Public Policy?
Public Policy is all the things that the government decides to do. They can cover a wide range of things and the list is nearly endless. In other words, Public Policy is the outcome or solution of Politics that these Government Institutions create.

10 Powers In order to create policy, Government must have the authority to do so. We call this power. Power is defined as the ability to command or prevent action, the ability to achieve a desired end.

11 Government Powers Government has three types of power Legislative
Executive Judicial These powers were granted to the Government through a document called the Constitution. A Constitution is a set or body of fundamental laws or principles, setting out the guidelines or structure for a government.

12 Who holds the power? It depends on the government -Dictatorship
-Oligarchy -Democracy

13 Dictatorship Single person controls the power

14 Oligarchy A small group controls the power

15 Democracy The masses (people) control the power

16 The State Definition of a State
There are four characteristics that states must have: Population Territory Sovereignty Government

17 How did the state come about
Multiple theories exist on this: By Force Evolutionary Devine Right Social Contract

18 By Force Groups banded together for protection Think do or die

19 Evolutionary From families to tribes

20 Devine Right God given right to rule

21 Social Contract An agreement between the government and the people.

22 So how does Government decide on Public Policy?
Whoever controls the power in the Government gets to decide public policy -Dictatorship (The individual in power) -Oligarchy (A small group has that power) -Democracy (We all have that power)
