1 Energy, Matter, and Living Things
Table of Contents Photosynthesis Cellular Respiration Cycles of Matter

2 How plants make food… Photosynthesis!
The ______ is the source of energy for photosynthesis Organisms that make their own food by photosynthesis are called… How do I get energy from the Sun?

3 Photosynthesis The chlorophyll collects the sunlight for energy.
First Stage of Photosynthesis: The plant captures sunlight in order to make food through photosynthesis. The SUN provides the energy. The chlorophyll collects the sunlight for energy. In the Chloroplast = where photosynthesis occurs

4 Photosynthesis Producing Food through Photosynthesis. After the chlorophyll captures the Sun’s energy, hydrogen (from the water that the roots supply) and Carbon Dioxide absorbed through the plants leaves, produces sugar, which is food

5 Photosynthesis

6 Photosynthesis .

7 Cellular Respiration The process where cells take sugar (glucose/food) to make energy.

8 Cellular Respiration Cellular Respiration Respiration needs (the reactants) *Oxygen is used. That comes from breathing *Energy is used. That comes from food Respiration produces (the products) *Carbon Dioxide *Water

9 Cellular Respiration *Respiration releases energy from glucose/food.
Releasing Energy Cellular respiration takes place in the mitochondria. *Respiration releases energy from glucose/food.

10 Cellular Respiration Opposite Processes Producers carry out photosynthesis, but producers and consumers both carry out cellular respiration. Use the word bank to complete the blank boxes. The products for photosynthesis are used for cellular respiration. The products of respiration are used for photosynthesis.

11 Cellular Respiration Fermentation A ball of bread dough mixed with yeast is left in a bowl at room temperature. As time passes, the dough increases in size. Happens in YEAST…produces alcohol and bubbles (CO2) Happens in our MUSCLES

12 Cycles of Matter Water Cycle
What are the three processes of the water cycle?

13 Cycles of Matter

14 Cycles of Matter Animals and burning of fossil fuels produces Carbon Dioxide when we respire. The plants use the Carbon Dioxide to produce Oxygen for us to breath and glucose for us to eat.

15 Cycles of Matter Nitrogen Cycle
The most common way source of nitrogen fixation is through Nitrogen Fixing Bacteria.

16 Cycles of Matter Cycles of Matter How does this picture show
the water cycle, oxygen cycle, nitrogen cycle, and food chain? REMEMBER: Energy passes from one organism to another! Energy is never created or destroyed!!
