2 Summary pt1. The reaction to the ruling was extremely mixed. Some states said desegregation would occur quickly, while other states said it would take years.

3 Summary pt.2 Unfortunately, there were also states that vowed not the desegregate, including Mississippi and Georgia. Nevertheless, within a year 500 schools desegregated.

4 Summary pt3 Economic pressure was used by white people to stand against desegregation. In fact, groups like the KKK went as far as using violence to try to get what they wanted.

5 Resistance to School Desegregation
Groups called the White Citizens’ Councils called for boycotts of businesses that supported desegregation. The Councils were made of of prominent members of society who proudly expressed racism. The KKK made a comeback committing violent attacks. Fortunately, the Supreme Court finally did something as they made two more rulings foricing schools to desegregate.

7 Crisis in Little Rock Arkansas became the first U.S state to admit African Americans into state universities without being required to by the court. Schools were becoming desegregated. However, the governor publically supported segregation. He ordered the National Guard to turn away the “Little Rock Nine”, but a federal judge ordered him to let the students go to school. There was a lot of violence outside the school so the POTUS placed the Arkansas National Guard under federal control and send paratroopers.

9 Civil Rights Act of 1957 On September 9, 1957, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1957, giving the attorney general greater power over school desegregation, as well as giving the federal government authority over violations of African American voting rights. the term Dixiecrat continued to be used for southern politicians who opposed desegregation and other civil liberties for African Americans.
