1 It is through hearing others’ stories and telling one’s own that it becomes clear that all stories, including those of students and their families, are really the human story.” (Benard, 2003, p. 133).

2 Percentage of Students
Schools are filled with children that have had to deal with adversity or have endured trauma and still manage to adapt and succeed in spite of the odds. Think about your schools, what percentage of students do you think had to overcome trauma and yet were able to successfully bounce back?

3 MOST SUCCEED MOST YOUNG PEOPLE WHO FACE SOME KIND OF RISK OR CHALLENGE, EARLY ON OR LATER IN THEIR CHILDHOOD, ACTUALLY DO SUCCEED. THEY SUCCEED IN SCHOOL AND IN LIFE. “Around 70% of young people in life’s most challenging conditions can overcome the odds.” (B. Bernard, personal communication, January 27, 2005).
