DOE Recognition for 50001 Conformance
Offers a no-cost way to receive recognition for establishing a business practice around the management of energy Not a certification program and does not require any third-party audits or verification Provides your facility(s) with tools to implement and maintain a structured, continual improvement-based EnMS Key Actions in a Ready EnMS Set an Energy Policy Have management commitment Empower an energy team Identify where energy is used Create plans to improve energy use Management approval of plans Track progress and reassess energy action plans Key Benefits of a Ready EnMS Manage risk associated with energy performance Reduce energy-related costs Increase cost competitiveness Dedicate more resources to growing staff and expanding production Demonstrate corporate leadership “50001 Ready has helped increase awareness, interest, and support for project completion. Projects that were not getting done before, are getting done now-because we can use data to support the ROI. Having gone through Ready was a good stepping stone to achieving our ISO certification.” —Tari Emerson, division energy manager, Charter Steel

50001: Increased Energy Performance
Comparison of sites at 3M & Schneider-Electric showing a DOUBLING of energy performance improvement with vs sites without “ISO is a standard that drives results directly to the bottom line. ISO systematically drives down energy costs and improves competitiveness through the assignment of responsibilities and raising the visibility of energy management within the organization.” —Andrew Hejnar, 3M

The Case for Ready A strategy for continuous energy (and water) improvement Recognizes the current Energy Management Program Creates energy awareness and working list of energy savings opportunities Reviews current billing and procurement Standardized approach that is transferable across site, state and national borders “HARBEC’s experience implementing [ISO 50001] was invaluable. It provided us with a data-driven disciplined approach to see where we can have the greatest impact on our bottom-line. Further, it’s opened our eyes to a whole world of eco-economic potential.” —Bob Bechtold, HARBEC, Inc.

Field Validation of ISO 50001 Savings
Findings around typical US energy savings over time. Business-as-Usual [EIA] ~1% per year Industry Leaders [Better Plants] ~ 2.5% per year ISO facilities [DOE] ~4% per year Enterprise-Wide Approach [DOE] ~5% per year A 2017 review of 43 US facilities doing ISO found: Average 12.9% energy consumption reduction over 3-year period [~3.71 trillion BTU source energy] Saved over $430,000/year on average from low- and no- cost operational improvements Paybacks of less than 2 years for most facilities Reference:

50001 & Compatibility with ISO standards
ENERGY POLICY Energy review Energy performance indicators Energy baseline Energy management Unique Elements: data-driven approach Leverage Common & Similar Elements ISO 14001 Environmental POLICY Environmental aspects Emergency preparedness Environmental management program Energy baseline Energy management MANAGEMENT COMMITMENT Roles, responsibility & authority Competence, training & awareness Communication Operational Control Monitoring & Measurement Documentation Internal Audit Corrective & preventative Action Management review Design Procurement ISO 9001 Quality POLICY Customer focus Planning of product realization Customer-related processes Control of nonconforming ISO can be easily integrated with other management system ISO standards… As you can see in this diagram, there is an essential core which is common to ISO 9001, and All good management systems are based around these common features. ISO builds on ISO ISO management systems help companies meet regulatory sustainability requirements, but does not measure ROI. ISO starts to address energy-related topics, but ISO is provides a more rigorous, data-driven approach. ISO enhances your ISO management system with a greater focus on energy utilization and energy data analysis. ISO is fully compatible with ISO 14001; no need to start from scratch in building an EnMS. ISO certified plants find ISO easier to implement, because it builds on the management system already in place. All good points This also applies to other sector specific management system standards such as medical devices and health and safety..
