Ecology

The study of the interactions that take place among organisms and their environment

Biosphere The part of Earth that supports life
Top portion of Earth's crust All the waters that cover Earth's surface Atmosphere that surrounds Earth.

Ecosystem Biotic Parts Abiotic Parts Plants Animals Bacteria Fungi
Atmosphere Soil Water

Population All the organisms in an ecosystem that belong to the same species Maple Trees Robins Earthworms

Community All the populations in an ecosystem Deciduous Forest
Maple trees Oak trees Pine trees Robins Rabbits

The place in which an organism lives
Habitat The place in which an organism lives provides the kinds of food and shelter, the temperature, and the amount of moisture the organism needs to survive Describe the habitat in the next slide.

Niche An organism’s job or importance in an ecosystem (ex: autotroph, carnivore) Each niche can only be filled by one organism or there will be competition.

Competition Two or more organisms want the same resources in the same ecosystem Food Mates Water habitat Only one can win!! Unless the other organism is able to migrate to another area it will perish.

Competition Limits Population Size
Population Size may vary over time but there is a limit to the number of a specific kind or organism that can live in an ecosystem. This is called the Carrying Capacity

Limiting Factor Anything that restricts the number of individuals in a population. (food, water, habitat) Includes living and nonliving features of the ecosystem What do you think is the limiting factor in the next slides?

Biodiversity

Biodiversity-the variety of different species from the six kingdoms in an ecosystem.

What types of organisms can you identify in this ecosystem?

Secondary Succession

Pioneer species A group of organisms, such as lichens, found in the primary stage of succession and that begin an area's soil-building process

Climax community A community that has reached a stable stage of ecological succession

Biome Large geographic areas with similar climates and ecosystems

Includes Tundra Taiga Desert Temperate deciduous forest
Temperate rain forest Tropical rain forest, and grassland
