Look up words 1-10 in the dictionary. Discuss with your partner how the word would have been used in a story about a boy in the 1800’s. Find words 1-15 in the story with your partner. Use context clues from the story. Give a synonym/definition/explanation for each word or phrase.

Tom Sawyer selection Tom Sawyer looked on the activity of whitewashing the fence as work. Yet he was able to convince the other boys that the same activity was fun. In fact, not only did they think it would be fun, they were so excited to do the whitewashing that they were willing to pay for it. What is it that can make the same action either work or fun? (Especially focus on the interaction between Tom and Ben). *Answer the question using RACE. Use specific examples from the story to back up your answer. Use additional examples from real life to help prove your point.

You need to have a modern day job that a parent might actually expect you to do (no painting). b.) You need to have a modern day payment that Ben gives to Tom. c.) You need to use modern day language It took Mark Twain 434 words to write this part. You need to have words.

This is what the author said after Tom’s experience.
“Tom discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it—namely, that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain. If he had been a great and wise philosopher, like the writer of this book, he would now have comprehended that Work consists of whatever a body is OBLIGED to do, and that Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do.”
