Dutch Architecture by Toby Gassner

Background Commonly referred to as “Dutch Colonial” style
Began spreading in the early 17th century Was popular through the early 18th century Mostly simple, one-story houses Created out of a need for simple, cheap, living spaces Mostly built by Dutch immigrants who needed a residency when immigrating to New York

General Information Almost all one, one and a half, or two story houses Mostly had gambrel roofs Became very present in the Dutch colony of New Netherland Gambrel roofs were symmetrical with flared eaves Almost all Dutch doors (half doors on the bottom) Brick chimneys Mostly gable-ended

Materials Due to the settlers needing simple living spaces, they used simple materials These houses were an immediate need, so the settlers used only available materials around the construction site The Abraham Manee house on Staten Island was made out of fieldstone and wood from nearby fallen trees The interior surfaces were typically made of natural clay and strengthened with horse hairs, all over rows of narrow wood platforms The narrow wood platforms used for the interior are called lath and plasters

Elements and Principles of Design

Elements of Design Line: all different types of lines are used here including diagonal, curved, horizontal, and vertical Color: The basic tan, dark brown, and white paint on the exterior walls and roof of the house which convey this is possibly a house or was a residency Lighter value

Principles of Design Balance: the house has an asymmetrical or informal balance as the different sides of the house are not identical Emphasis: there are columns on the front patio that clearly draw the attention of anyone looking at the house Unity: there is unity shown in the roof as the entire roof is the same brown tile. Also, each window is lined with white painting
