Industrial Revolution began in Britain
The Industrial Revolution did not happen swiftly IR was a long, slow, uneven process in which production shifted from simple hand tools to complex machines

Why Britain? Lower food prices = more money to buy manufactured goods and more children = larger labor force Import/export policies of free trade from enlightenment coal and iron ore was abundant to fuel the revolution

Before the Industrial Revolution
Prior to 1750 people: Lived in small villages Grew their own food Made their own clothes Knew little of the world

Farming Methods Improve
Farm journals spread Crop rotation methods & mixing soils Jethro Tull invented the “Seed drill” More efficient farming less workers needed

Population Multiplies
Agriculture revolution creates surplus of food Better hygiene and sanitation Improved medical care European Population 1700: 120 million 1800: 180 million

Urbanization Unemployed farmers move to cities in search of work

By 1850, villages grew into industrial towns
Clothes made in factories Travel increased by train or steamship Food shipped from far away Skyscrapers begin to be developed Ditherington Flax Mill – oldest iron framed building
