Conditional Equation An equation whose truth depends on the value of the variable x + 4 = 7 If x = 3, it’s true! If x = 2, it’s false!

Definitions Each number that makes an equation true is called a solution of the equation. To solve an equation, you must find the values that make the equation true.

Definitions An inverse operation is the operation that will reverse (undo) a given operation. Equivalent equations have the same solutions.

Addition Property of Equality
If a = b and c is a real number, then a + c = b + c. You may also subtract the same number from both sides of an equation.

Multiplication Property of Equality
If a = b and c is a real number, then ac = bc. You may also divide both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number.
