3 National School Counselors Week Mayor Bob Walkup signed a proclamation in honor of National School Counseling Week February 2-6. Thank you to each of our counselors who contribute so much to the learning environment in Sunnyside District schools!

4 Tucson Youth Leadership Summit Who: Tucson-area teens, grades 7 – 12 When: Saturday, March 7, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Where: Desert View High School Topics of discussion: teen pregnancy, gangs, drugs, violence, education and community development. Free Community Fair for grades K – 6 Who: Tucson-area elementary students, grades K – 6 When: Saturday, March 7, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Where: Desert View High School parking lot

5 Gallego wins city championship Two Sunnyside District schools – Gallego Basic and Rivera elementary schools - battled for the city title at this years Dale Lopez Roskruge Cougar Classic Basketball Tournament. The final score was Gallego 19, Rivera 18.

6 Give Kids a Smile Day The Arizona Dental Association, Pima Community College, Pima County Health Department and many volunteer dentists, dental hygienists and dental hygiene students donated time and resources to provide dental exams, cleanings and oral health education to more than 70 Sunnyside District students. Kristin Robinson-Lund, Ocotillo Preschool Nurse, coordinates Give Kids a Smile Day.

7 State wrestling individual championships Congratulations to wrestlers from Desert View and Sunnyside high schools who competed at last weekends individual state tournament. Lucio Murillo Sophomore 1st place 140 Kory DeBerry Sophomore 1st place 189 Anthony Pike Senior 1st place 112 Alex Akers Junior 2nd place 152 Many Aranda Junior 2nd place 160 Cedric Gonzales Freshman 2nd place Desert View High SchoolCoach: Matt Montoya 103 lbs. Oscar Ornelas Senior 2nd place Sunnyside High School qualified as the number one team for the 5A Division II state team title. The Blue Devil wrestlers will compete this Saturday, February 28 in Phoenix at Shadow Mountain High School.

8 State writing award Desert View ninth-grader Selena Padilla won second place in the 9-10 grade category of the Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest, which is sponsored by the Arizona Educational Foundation. Selena and teacher Maria Elena Wakamatsu were invited to a special Arizona Statehood event with the governor in Phoenix on February 12.

9 Bens Bell for Harry Parks Ocotillo Preschool custodian Harry Parks was awarded a Bens Bell for making the community a better, kinder place to live.

10 Bernie Cohn Rodel Exemplary Principal Liberty Elementary School Principal Bernie Cohn is one of two principals to be the first in Pima County honored by the Rodel Charitable Foundation as an Exemplary Principal. He will receive $5,000 in savings bonds and will mentor three aspiring principals over the next two years.
