Spanish Missionaries tried to make Native Americans more European this way.

9. labor force Workers in a country or region.
Women became part of the labor force for the first time during WWI and WWII.

10. civil rights The basic rights due to all citizens.
Movement in the 1960’s led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

11. dominion
Self governing area subject to Great Britain.

Many countries have a Prime Minister instead of a president.

15. Explain the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The Bay of Pigs was an unsuccessful invasion of Cuba to assassinate Fidel Castro, led by the United States. It was an embarrassment the United States and led to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Cuban Missile Crisis- Confrontations between the United States and the Soviet Union over the presence of nuclear missiles in Cuba. It almost led to nuclear war.

16. Explain the Cold War.
A period of great tension between the United States and the Soviet Union which lasted for more than 40 years after WWII.
No fighting occurred between the US and the USSR during this time. Instead it was more about fear due to the arms race.
The US was worried that the Soviet Union would spread Communism to other countries.

17. Explain the Holocaust.
The mass killing of 6 million Jews by the Nazis during WWII.

18. Explain where the first natives in North America came from.
Scientist believe they came from the continent of Asia.
over the land bridge between Alaska and Russia (Siberia) during the Ice Age to follow herds of animals.
Natives believe they were created here.

19. Explain Pearl Harbor.
Attack on the naval base in Hawaii, without warning, by the Japanese air force.
December 7, 1941
We declared war the next day.
This would lead America to fight in WWII.

20. Explain how Canada gained their freedom from Great Britain.
Canada wrote a new constitution in 1982, which made them completely independent from Great Britain.

21. Explain the British North American Act of 1867.
Canada became united as a dominion of Great Britain. They gained control of their own government.

22. Explain the Quebec Act.
Gave French people living in Quebec the right to speak their own language, practice their own religion, and follow their customs and traditions after the British won the Seven Years War (French and Indian War).

23. What does Quebec feel they should do to preserve their culture?
They want Quebec to become a separate country to maintain their culture.

24. Explain the Commonwealth of Nations.
It is a voluntary organization whose members are former Great Britain colonies.
Purpose is to cooperate with one another on matters of trade and economics.
