1 EARTH’s BIOMES AND ECOSYSTEMS
5A SCIENCE FS2017

2 Aquatic Ecosystems Essential Question: What are aquatic ecosystems?
Unit 2 Lesson 2 Essential Question: What are aquatic ecosystems? Lesson Objective Students will be able to describe the characteristics of marine, freshwater, and other aquatic ecosystems.

3 Having water of liquid on the surface
Vocabulary Word part Meaning wet- Having water of liquid on the surface -land solid part of Earth’s surface

4 VOCABULARY wetland estuary

5 What is an aquatic ecosystem?
Any water environment and the community of organisms that live there.

6 3 major types of aquatic ecosystems
freshwater ecosystems rivers & streams lakes & ponds wetlands marine ecosystems oceans estuaries where rivers and oceans meet at the coastline

7 What abiotic factors affect aquatic ecosystems?
water temperature water depth amount of light oxygen level water pH salinity (salt level) rate of water flow

8 CW/HW 1 What is the main difference in the water that is in freshwater ecosystems, estuaries, and marine ecosystems? What plants and animals do you find in each aquatic ecosystem? List at least 2 animals and 2 plants. Describe how these animals and plants are adapted to their environment.

9 CW/HW 2 Read pages in your science books. Answer the following questions in your NBs (you may use your science book or Ipad for your research): 1. What can happen when a wetland is replaced by a development in an area? 2. Why might stream water have more oxygen in it than pond water does? 3. Where are ecosystems found in the ocean? 4. Look at the photos of coastal ocean ecosystems on page 82. List abiotic factors that affect these ecosystems. (at least 2 each)
