3. What is the President’s Cabinet?
Definition: a group of presidential advisors that include the head of the 15 top-level executive departments.

5. Who is on the cabinet?
Heads of depts are called secretaries
Dept. of Justice is called Attorney General
Appointed by the President with Senate approval
The Vice President, chief of staff, press secretary, and other officials often join

6. How did the Cabinet get its start?
Article II states:
[The President] may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices.
No specific details about departments or how they are structured. -

7. How did the Cabinet get its start?
George Washington created first depts.
1st cabinet: Three departments
State – Thomas Jefferson
War (now defense) – Henry Knox
Treasury Alexander Hamilton
The cabinet has developed out of usage and tradition

Advise the president about problems surrounding their department

9. Independent Agencies
Not part of the cabinet, President gets to appoint directors, with Senate approval.
The executive branch has hundreds of independent agencies
Three kinds:

11. NC General Assembly
Main Responsibilities - Laws of North Carolina, known as statutes, are made by the General Assembly. Meets in regular session beginning in January of each odd-numbered year, and adjourns to reconvene the following even-numbered year for a shorter session. Senate - 50 members House of Representatives members

Senate Leader - Lieutenant Governor of the State - Dan Forrest (R) – elected by the people of the State
House of Representatives is presided over by a Speaker – selected by its members - Tim Moore (R)
Non – Legislative Powers - the approval of the governor's appointment of certain officials, impeachment of government officials, amendments to State Constitution
Majority party in both NC House and Senate - Republican

Lt. Governor – Dan Forrest (R) – term is 4 years
Powers of the Governor – powers of appointment of executive branch officials, judges, members of boards and commissions, veto power, head of the Council of State
NC Cabinet – 10 Departments - Administration, Commerce, Environmental Quality, Health and Human Services, Information Technology, Military and Veteran Affairs, Natural and Cultural Resources, Public Safety, Revenue, Transportation
Main Duties: preparing and presenting the state budget to the General Assembly
