1 Warm Up Why is the sky blue?

2 Warm Up Answer Sunlight reaches Earth's atmosphere and is scattered in all directions by all the gases and particles in the air. Blue light is scattered more than other colors because it travels as shorter, smaller waves. This is why we see a blue sky most of the time.

4 Homework Answer Earthquakes are vibrations in the earth that release the potential energy stored in rocks. Earthquakes create seismic waves, which are waves of energy that travel through a medium (the Earth's layers.) This makes them a form of mechanical waves, just like sound waves! FYI: They contain both longitudinal and transverse waves.

7 Light: Type of energy made by the vibrations of electrically charged particles (photons) that spread out as transverse waves. Scientists call light “Electromagnetic Radiation.” Electromagnetic Radiation can be described as a stream of photons, each traveling in a wave-like pattern, carrying energy and moving at the speed of light.

8 The Electromagnetic Spectrum
All light, visible and invisible is part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Light carries both electric and magnetic energy. Gamma, Xrays, Ultraviolet(UV), Visible Light, Infrared, Microwaves, and Radio Waves are all forms of the electromagnetic spectrum.

9 Energy makes all the difference…
The main difference between these waves is the energy of the photons. Radio waves have photons with the lowest energies. Microwaves have a little more energy than radio waves. Infrared has still more, followed by visible, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays.

10 Some More Vocabulary Reflection: The bouncing back of light as it hits a surface. Refraction: The bending of light as it passes from one medium to another. This change in direction occurs because light travels at different speeds through different mediums. Color: Visible Spectrum of light perceived by the human eye.

2. Turn to the back drawing of “Wavestown.” Label and color in the Electromagnetic Spectrum Key. Read the article. Color in the pictures according to the Electromagnetic Spectrum Key.
