Make new section for notes called “Haitian Revolution”

2 Overview of Tasks For the next 3 days, you will be researching and analyzing the Haitian Revolution. Your overall goal is to know the basic story of the Haitian revolution, evaluate whether it is a revolution, and contrast its goals to its accomplishments.

3 Targets 6.1.6: can identify the causes for the Haitian Revolution, the conditions under the eventual Haitian government, and evaluate the extent to which the new Haitian government achieved the goals of the revolution. 6.2.3: can contrast the goals of the Haitian Revolution to the realities of the government it created, using a thesis and premises to evaluate the extent to which the government achieved those goals.

4 Haitian Revolution: Was a revolution performed mostly by slaves in the French colony of Saint-Domingue. One of the only successful slave revolts in history. Created the modern nation of Haiti.

5 Haiti and Hispaniola The Caribbean Island of Hispaniola is divided in two. Haiti was a French Colony. The Dominican Republic was a Spanish Colony.

6 Saint-Domingue The French Colony that became Haiti was called “Saint- Domingue.” It was incredibly profitable. In 1789 it produced: 60% of the world’s coffee. 40% of the world’s sugar 4% of the jobs in France were dependent upon the goods coming from Saint-Domingue.

7 Population of Saint-Domingue
Saint-Domingue had a distinct social system based on race. 10,000 Grand Blancs—white people of considerable property— slaveowners. 30,000 Petite Blancs—whites not wealthy enough to own slaves. 28,000 mulattoes and free people of color. A mulatto was someone of both white and black descent.

8 Population of Saint-Domingue
All told there was 68,000 free people in Saint-Domingue in There were 452,000 slaves.

9 Slavery Slavery was big business in the Caribbean.
Because of rampant disease like Yellow Fever, Slaves had to be replaced often. Around 10,000 new slaves arrived in Saint-Domingue every year.

10 Slavery Slavery was exceptionally brutal in the Caribbean.
Many in France wished to see slavery abolished but it was such an important part of the French economy, that many feared it would be impossible to do.

11 Task: Haitian Revolution
You will be turning in your work for the next 3 days. Today and tomorrow you will get a set of basic questions to guide your research. Wednesday you will get a writing prompt. Everything can be found on the website. DUE Thursday.

12 Do Now Take out a spare piece of paper.
