3 Dark & Light Notan is a Japanese art form that means:
what is dark is not light, what is light is not dark. This is the basis of all design and an important guiding principle of art.

4 LESSON VOCABULARY Japanese Notan Shape: Geometric and Organic
Space: Negative and Positive Balance: Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Contrast: created when using opposites together I understand that artists and cultures create art that shows unique characteristics of style

5 The principle of NOTAN, as it relates to design, is defined as the interaction between a positive (light) and a negative (dark) space. Western culture tends to emphasize the positive Figures in design, with less emphasis on the negative (background) space. (Europe /America) The Eastern culture from which NOTAN arose, seeks a more balanced view of the world, and of design as it relates to the world. (Asia: Japan/ China/Korea/ India/ Middle East) I understand how art is affected by time cultures and circumstances

6 The classic yin/yang symbol that we all know is a reflection of this desire for balance.

7 SHAPE is one of the elements of Art. Lines that close are shapes.
Shapes are flat. Some shapes are geometric, such as squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles. These shapes are typically used in Math. Other shapes are free-form and irregular. They are organic or shapes found in nature. I understand that the elements of art are the basic marks used to make art

8 Balance is one of the principles of art which describes how artists to create visual weight.
Artists think about how to make their works balanced by using elements such as line, shape and color. There are different ways to balance an artwork: I understand that the way that I organize the elements of art to produce different effects are the principles of art

9 Space is another element of art
Space is another element of art. Space is an empty place or surface in or around a work of art. Space can be… two-dimensional, three-dimensional, Or… negative and/or positive. You can easily see the positive and negative space in this sculpture. Artists also create positive and negative space in two-dimensional artworks. Public art sculpture (title unknown) by Ace Dawson-Tobak, 1996
