2 Basic expectations To be on time to class and with your work
Be on time ► lateness disrupts & is disrespectful Late work has consequences ► 10% a day I will contact parents of students who are falling behind

3 Course Description GOAL: To investigate how what we are and where we come from determines where we are headed

4 SOME of the topics covered:
World War I World War II Cold War Current Humanitarian crises (refugee crises, access to food/water, medical crises) Current Conflicts (modern Genocides, current wars – Ukraine, Syria, terrorism) No textbook – handouts and chromebooks

5 EVALUATION – course Framework
QEP 5 themes (Conflict, Power, Wealth, Environment, Population) QEP Evaluation is based on 2 competencies: Competency 1: interprets a world problem (50%) Competency 2: takes a position on a world issue (50%) HOWEVER, STUDENTS RECEIVE ONE COMBINED GRADE IBO We will work with IBO “Key Concepts”, Related Concepts” and “Global Contexts”. IBO Evaluation is still based on 4 criteria: Knowledge and Understanding Investigating Communicating Thinking Critically

6 IMPORTANT NOTE ON EVALUATION
IBO students receive two grades on assignments and two report cards at the end of the school year (one IBO the other QEP) IMPORTANT: TERMS 1 and 2 are worth 20% each, whereas term 3 is worth 60% of the year TENTATIVE: IB e-assessments: in May

7 Evaluation – Within each term
Homework and Participation ( up to 20%) Write, present, debate, dance, sing, make a fool of yourself … participate Quizzes (up to 30%) Surprise quizzes on homework assigned and on recent classes taught Unit tests (20-50%) One test per unit Terms, short answer, maps, visual media, essay Major projects (30-50%) Position papers (research papers), simulations, debates, negotiations

9 MAJOR DUE DATES THIS TERM
Position Paper: October 5–6 Unit Test (for the unit on WWI + current event: October 17/18 Due dates sometimes change, these are posted on the website/Google Classroom

10 TODAY’s HOMEWORK 1: Buy materials
TO BUY Binder with loose-leaf Quiz/Reflection notebook (or section in the binder) Pens, pencils, ruler, eraser and pencil sharpener Colouring pencils and markers (5+ colours) HAVE IT ALL BY NEXT CLASS! FROM ME in-class texts, copies of readings, maps, instructions, study notes, Sites to go to - Workbook (when applicable)

Answer the question below in 1 page (hand- written in pen, single spaced and CLEAR): DUE: Sept. 6 (07, 09, 04, 06) and 7 (08, 03) Why do civilized states wage wars or commit atrocities?

Define your term (key term from question) State your position on the question (why?) Provide a short (2 sentences) description of the example you will use to argue your position (In general what it was, when, where, and who) Paragraph 2 Show how the definition of your term fits the example (here you want to take the main parts of the definition and show how the example fits each part of the definition) Present your argument(s) for WHY (answer the question) Go to the website – this Power Point will be under PowerPoints

13 BRAINSTORM “Atrocities”
Form a small group of 2-4 people Write down a few ideas of how you would define “Atrocities” and “War” Brainstorm some hypothetical and historical examples Share with the class – if there is time
