(2) Physical (e.g. injury) Financial (e.g. replacing stolen property) Psychological (e.g. depression, fear) Social (affects relationships, trust) Fear (influences way we behave with others) Community breakdown (become defensive, stereotype, mistrusting) Financial (white collar crime reduces government funds & decreases money to spend on welfare) Corporate crime e.g. pollution can cause loss of faith between employers & employees

12 Eye on the exam… You must have an awareness of the social problems linked with crime and deviance e.g. racist crime, teenage crime and the increase in female crime. You must also know what the government is trying to do to reduce the problem.

What is meant by the term ‘folk devil’ and how does it apply to young people? What is meant by ‘moral panic’ and how does it apply to young people? Give an example. What is meant by ‘scapegoating’ and how does it apply to young people? What are the Government doing to try to reduce antisocial behaviour? Why do some people say that these methods are ineffective? Describe one way in which recent governments have tried to reduce anti- social behaviour and explain how successful this approach has been (5) 15 minutes Team B What is a ‘racially aggravated offence’? What percentage of crimes are racially aggravated? What is meant by ‘racist victimization’? What has the Government done to try to reduce racially motivated crimes? 2002/03 British Crime Survey 4% mixed race 3% Asian 2% black 2% Chinese/other origin Less than 1% white Jannson (2006) 20% of black vandalism victims thought the crime was racially motivated Less than 1% of white vandalism victims though the crime was racially motivated 11% of police reported harassment was racially or religious motivated in 2007/08 Walklate (2007) argues that statistics are likely to underestimate the extent to which routine harassment is part of the everyday lives of people from minority ethnic groups. British Crime Survey 1999/2000 – 10,758 racially or religiously aggravated harassment 2006/07 – 28,485 2007/08 – 26,495
