1. Militarism- Arms races between nations; Built up to intimidate other nations (hint: give a kid a hammer)
Russian army had over 1,000,000
Germany and France had 900,000 each
2. Alliances - agreements between 2 or more countries to defend and help each other
3. Imperialism- The policy of extending the rule of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of gaining colonies
4. Nationalism- pride in ones country or culture and willingness to defend it in war

5. Effects of WWI
Approximately 20 million soldier and civilian casualties (Europe, SW Asia , Africa)
Many African and Middle Eastern colonies (before controlled by Germany and Ottoman Empire) were reassigned to France and England. This leads to growing nationalism and call for independence (but not until after WW2)
