1 Lesson 1.6 – Problem Solving
Write this TITLE down on your notes!!! Lesson 1.6 – Problem Solving

2 Copy everything below Objective - To identify relevant information to solve a problem and to find missing terms in a sequence. The Problem Solving Plan Understand the Problem Write the question from the problem Write the item you are finding Cross out or identify irrelevant info (or extra info) Make a Plan Write out the facts and math operation you will use Solve the Problem Do all of the math Look Back See if your answer is possible or reasonable Make sure you use labels

3 1) Joe has $17.50. If he buys 3 pens for 70 cents
WRITE DOWN THIS PROBLEM SOLVING 1) Joe has $ If he buys 3 pens for 70 cents each and a ruler for $1.20, how much will he spend? Write out: “Question is how much will he spend?” Finding? I am finding an amount of money Cross out (or write): “Irrelevant: Joe has $17.50.” Understand The Problem Make a Plan Let me find out how much Joe will spend for 3 pens by multiplying, then add it to the cost of the ruler. Solve the Problem Multiply: 3 • 0.70 = 2.10 Add: = 3.30 Look Back Label: $3.30 Does it make sense???

4 2) The local theater seats 1200 people. If 570 adult
tickets are sold for $3 each, and 200 child tickets are sold for $1.50 each, how much was raised? Try This One Understand The Problem Write out: “Question is how much was raised?” Finding? I am finding an amount of money Cross out (or write): “Irrelevant: The local theater seats 1200 people.” Make a Plan Let me find the total raised from adult tickets, then the total raised from child tickets. Then add both totals. Solve the Problem Multiply: 570 • 3 = and 200 • 1.50 = 300 Add: = 2010 Look Back Label: $2,010 Does it make sense???

5 A sequence is an order list of numbers that has a constant pattern
Sequences A sequence is an order list of numbers that has a constant pattern 1, 3, 5, 7, __, __, __ 9 11 13 3, 6, 12, 24, __, __, __ 48 96 192 +2 The pattern is each number increases by 2. The pattern is each number multiplies by 2. 25, 21, 17, 13, __, __, __ 9 5 1 800,400,200,100, __, __, __ 50 25 12.5 Copy everything above -4 The pattern is each number decreases by 4. The pattern is each number divides by 2.

6 Find the next three terms of each sequence below
and describe the pattern. 1) 1, 3, 9, 27, ___, ___, ___ 81 243 729 The pattern is each number is multiplied by 3 The pattern is each number subtracts 9, then adds 1 2) 81, 72, 73, 64, ___, ___, ___ 65 56 57 -9 +1 -9 +1 -9 +0 The pattern is the denominator increases by 1 3) , , +1

7 Homework Time to get our Practice Workbook out and turn to Lesson 1.6.
First thing, write your name on the page. Remember to do BOTH sides, pages
