1 Drill 4/30 Now that you’ve started thinking about your persuasive speech, let’s consider note cards. Why is it a good idea to use note cards for your speech? What do you think you should include in a note card that you’ve created for your speech? Why is it a bad idea to have too many note cards?

3 Requirements for Speech
Note Cards: 6 note cards allowed for the outline + 3 note cards allowed for 3 different quotes Introduction with Hook Background info or context Thesis statement “Body” of your presentation: follow handout. Remember to use RR: If/then rhetorical question answer question provide solution Conclusion: Advanced Transition Word/Phrase and restate thesis in new words Discuss general problems with your topic and your solution End with a Call to Action that clearly communicates what the audience can do to help

4 Note Card Content Example
1. Topic Sentence: Advanced transition word + main idea of thesis statement + first point to prove your thesis is true. For example: Primarily, most people do not know how deadly a carnivorous diet can be, nor do they know how beneficial a vegetarian lifestyle can be because they have not been properly educated about it. Note Card: Primarily, most people don’t know deadly carnivorous healthy vegi b/c NOT educated

5 Logos, Pathos, Ethos Logos Pathos Ethos An appeal to logic and reason
An appeal to emotional reaction. Ethos An appeal based on your own credibility.

6 Learning Targets I can organize the content of the persuasive essay into an outline for an effective speech. I can use symbols, abbreviations, capitalization, chunky spacing, and highlighted words to make effective glance-and-go note cards. I can implement the methods of logos, pathos, and ethos into my argument in order to strengthen it.
