1 Charges and how they behave
Unit 6 – Electricity and magnetism

2 Model of the Atom The electrical charges that we will investigate are actually created by the atoms that make up everything. Protons – have a positive charge Neutrons – have a neutral charge Electrons – have a negative charge

3 Attraction and Repulsion
Like charges repel Opposite charges attract

4 Movement of electrons Electrons are the currency of the atom.
They can be added or removed by other atoms. When this happens the atoms become charged. If an atom gains electrons it become negative If an atom loses electrons it becomes positive

5 Charge By induction Electrons can also move within the atom.
If there is a like charge placed near an atom, the electrons will be pushed to the other side. If there is an opposite charge, the electrons will be attracted to that side.

6 Charge by Induction

7 Charges Guidelines
