2 An initial challenge What on earth is Knowledge Translation?
Different things to different people The thing you do at the end of a research project Translational research! Knowledge Translation is getting the right information, to the right people, at the right time, in a format they can use.

3 KT is the pathway to IMPACT
World Health Org defines KT as: "The synthesis, exchange, and application of knowledge by relevant stakeholders to accelerate the benefits of global and local innovation in strengthening health systems and improving people’s health." KT : Requires partnerships with key users and other stakeholders Ensures relevancy of questions and deliverables Includes dissemination and implementation/uptake Is oriented to creating impact

4 Changes in demand for capacity building
Funders have started asking….. NSW Office for Health and Medical Research The Translational Research Grants Scheme (TRGS)  The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia  Western Australia Department of Health SHRAC Research Translation Projects Telethon-Perth Children's Hospital Research Fund  Queensland Emergency Medicine Research Foundation QEMRF Research funding programs Children’s Hospital Foundation Queensland Dementia Collaborative Research Centres

5 Willingness for capacity building
The New Zealand Story…. Health Research Council (HRC) & Ministry of Business, Innovation& Employment (MBIE) Research funders are asking for non-academic impact. Grants are being awarded based on likely societal impacts in addition to scientific strengths. Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) Researchers/research organisations are being rewarded for non-academic impact

6 Success! New South Wales Department of Health Facilitated connections
Worked with grant applicants KT planning and capacity development Gained funding in excess of $1 Million. Facilitated connections Researcher collaborations and non-academic connections Training/awareness Over 500 researchers & research managers trained in translation and impact planning.
