Japan’s Ambitions Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 and China in 1937 Japan wanted more south of China which was controlled by foreign nations France, Netherlands, Britain, U.S. July 1941 Japan took Indochina and U.S. cut off trade with Japan, including oil Japan wanted oil and met with U.S. but Tojo prepared for a secret strike Roosevelt sent out war warning on Dec. 6, 1941 to bases in Hawaii, Guam, and Philippines

7 The attack on Pearl Harbor
December 7, 1941 Japan sent 180 warplanes nearly crippled the U.S. pacific fleet 2400 sailor died 18 ships sunk or damaged 1178 wounded U.S. now in a 2 front war U.S. declared war on Japan on Dec. 8 Germany and Italy declared war on the U.S. 3 days later
