2 Introduction to ratios and percent

3 RATIOS AND PERCENT …ANOTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT FRACTION ! Format your papers for Cornell notes. Topic: Ratios and Percent E.Q. How can I computer the percent from a given ratio?

4 Let’s first define…what is a fraction?
A fraction is a way of expressing a number. Ratios are expressed as a fraction or by placing colons into the numbers between the amounts present. A fraction consists of two numbers, a numerator which gives the number of equal parts and a denominator which gives the number of those parts that make up a whole. For example, the fraction 3⁄4 could be used to represent three equal parts of a cake, where the whole cake is divided into four equal parts.

5 What is a ratio? A relationship between quantities…

6 What is a Percent?

7 The Relationship Among Fractions, Decimals, Percents:
All represent a part of a whole A fraction is based on the number into which the whole is divided (the denominator).  The numerator (the top) is the PART, the denominator (the bottom) is the WHOLE. A decimal is based on the number in terms of tenths, hundredths, thousandths, etc. A percent is based on the number in terms of 100. Fraction              Decimal              Percent

8 Steps to convert a ratio to a percent
The first thing is to convert the fraction into a decimal. Remember…. The denominator (number at the bottom of the fraction) is the devisor (outside the house), and the numerator (number on the top of the fraction) id the dividend (the number inside the house)

9 Steps to convert a ratio to a percent continued…
After DIVIDING…we get the decimal ! To obtain the percent… remember to move the decimal two spaces to the right
