10 Grades K-5 Rationale This program was designed from the ground up by science education experts at the University of California, Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. Amplify Science builds a deeper understanding of science and engineering practices through the investigation of real world phenomenon. Students take on the role of scientists and are expected to investigate, make sense of, and solve a problem using a range of experiences that include discussion, reading, writing, hands-on learning, and exploration through scientific models. Based on current research and proven to be effective for a range of learners including English Language Learners, the Amplify curriculum has been tested with 474 teachers and 30,000 students that reflect the diversity of learners in our own district. 100% complete and ready to implement in the coming school year, Amplify Science curriculum comes with a range of materials, both print and digital, that are easily integrated into classroom learning by a range of teaching abilities from the most experienced to interns without any previous teaching experience.

11 Grades 6-8 Rationale A complete NGSS program that is grounded in research and proven effective in increasing science content knowledge and scientific literacy. Contains compelling phenomena that drives the curriculum and is culturally appropriate for our students. Students are put into the role of actual scientists, following a highly developed storyline while engaged in science and engineering practices. Students are engaged in literacy-rich activities, including scientific discourse where they are using appropriate academic vocabulary and writing about their discoveries. Grade appropriate math is embedded into the program and is accessible to the students. The teachers edition is structured to allow brand new teachers to easily access the content and teach without looking for extra background information. The materials provide strategies for diverse populations. Teachers are provided with rationale behind the activities to facilitate classroom instruction.

How can we come to an agreement on where to trim or shift time to not add to the content burden?

20 District Provided Professional Development
Grades K-5 Grades 6-8 NGSS training (three dimensions of NGSS so that teachers can see the big picture, NGSS leveled, grade/grade band specific) Release time or after school for collaboration and PLC/Cadre Science time for lesson planning, building background, collaborating, and unpacking during the site time (3 hours Friday July 26th) NGSS training (specifically, the shifts in practice) Release time for collaboration/observation Classroom technology - training and properly updated for all school sites

21 Amplify Provided Professional Development
Grades K-5 Grades 6-8 Meet with Amplify to discuss professional development needs, such as: Online student access to readers, including text to speech Pacing guide “fast track” available for all grades, especially with half day kindergarten, progression or order of units taught CAST examples/practice Checklist for assessments K-2 Implementation of the program (not the theory of where the program came from); specifically the Where to?
