1 CAHSEE PREP. Week 4 Algebra and Functions Valley OFL Prep Sessions

2 Order of Operations: Parentheses or other grouping symbols
Exponents and roots Multiplication and division from Left to Right Addition and Subtraction from Left to Right

3 Practice When a = 3 and b = -4, what is the value of the expression?

4 Practice Write an expression for the following problem. The OFL Mathletes are planning to order customized pencils and erasers. The pencils will cost $1 each and the erasers $1.50 each. There is a setup charge of $10. What will be the cost to order 100 pencils and erasers?

5 Practice For a certain rectangle the length is twice the width. What is the perimeter of the rectangle?

6 Practice Solve: When the sum of twice a number and 3 is multiplied by 4, the result is the same as 8 less than the product of 3 and the number. What is the number?

7 Practice Sally is making punch. She is using 6 cups less of orange juice as cranberry juice. If she makes 18 cups of juice, how much of each juice does she need?

8 Systems of Equations Solve this system:
Carlos bought 2 pencils and 6 pens for $ Lisa bought 3 pencils and 3 pens for $ Let x = cost of one pencil and y = cost of one pen. What is the cost of one pencil? What is the cost of one pen?

9 Practice The sum of two numbers is 88. The second number is four times the first added to 5. Write the two equations. Solve.

10 Polynomials: Adding and Subtracting: add or subtract terms that are exactly the same. Multiplying and Dividing: multiply or divide coefficients; add or subtract the powers of like terms.

11 Graphing Slope = x-intercept = value where the equation crosses the x-axis. Let y = 0 y-intercept = value where the equation crosses the y-axis. Let x = 0

12 Slope Negative Slope: Positive Slope:
Parallel Slope: Slope is the same as the original line Perpendicular Slope: slope is the negative reciprocal of the original line

13 Is (-3, 4) a solution to the equation
2x + 3y = 6? Is (10, -2) a solution to the equation ½ x + 4y = -10

14 Graph: 2x + 6y = 4 Find the slope of the line parallel to the above line.

15 Slope What is the slope of the line drawn through (3, 0) and (-1, -4)?
Find the Slope of the line perpendicular to the above slope.
