2 Aftermath of Persian Wars
: Both Athens and Sparta claimed credit for the victory over Persia---This leads to PROBLEMS. Sparta, at first, withdrew from Greek affairs to take care of stuff at home. But, Persia still remained a THREAT. So, Athens becomes the dominant city-state. Organizes the Delian League: 140 member city-states Athens provided most of the navy and land forces Other city-states provide $ and ships Treasury kept on island of Delos 6. Accomplishments: (1) freed Ionia from Persian rule (2) eliminated pirates from Aegean Sea area. 7. IMPACT: ALLOWED OVERSEAS TRADE TO EXPAND---GREECE GROWS RICHER!!!

3 Two Leagues Created Greeks do not want to be caught off guard again; create alliances Athens creates the Delian League Main city- Athens, many other allies Spartan creates the Peloponnesian League Main city- Sparta and few other allies

Takes funds from Delian League to rebuild Athens Creates a new empire that is stronger and that flourishes Art and architecture advance Philosophy and learning Science and sculpting

8 The Peloponnesian War Civil war between Sparta and Athens
Fought b/w Delian and Peloponnesian Leagues Sparta declares war in 431 BC Athens tries to battle at sea, but wont work Sparta traps Athens on the acropolis Holds them hostage Two events led to a loss for Athens Plague hit inside the Athens walls Sneak attack of soldiers is destroyed; Athens surrenders

9 Effects of the War Weakens all areas of Greece
Leaves feelings of hatred Athens is burned and destroyed Leaves them open to attack from Macedonia

10 Phillip II of Macedon Attacks and conquers Greece while it is weak
Killed at his daughters wedding Son takes over for him Son is Alexander the Great

11 Alexander’s Empire Covered the Persian Empire and more
Fought for 11 years, stopped, died of the flu…..or was it?
