2. Aftermath of Persian Wars:
Both Athens and Sparta claimed credit for the victory over Persia---This leads to PROBLEMS.
Sparta, at first, withdrew from Greek affairs to take care of stuff at home.
But, Persia still remained a THREAT.
So, Athens becomes the dominant city-state.
Organizes the Delian League:
140 member city-states
Athens provided most of the navy and land forces
Other city-states provide $ and ships
Treasury kept on island of Delos
6. Accomplishments: (1) freed Ionia from Persian rule (2) eliminated pirates from Aegean Sea area.
7. IMPACT: ALLOWED OVERSEAS TRADE TO EXPAND---GREECE GROWS RICHER!!!

3. Two Leagues Created
Greeks do not want to be caught off guard again; create alliances
Athens creates the Delian League
Main city- Athens, many other allies
Spartan creates the Peloponnesian League
Main city- Sparta and few other allies

Athens tries to battle at sea, but wont work
Sparta traps Athens on the acropolis
Holds them hostage
Two events led to a loss for Athens
Plague hit inside the Athens walls
Sneak attack of soldiers is destroyed; Athens surrenders
