2 What is an Earthquake? Earth is made up of large pieces of flat rock
These are called Tectonic plates Two plates rub together This forces waves of energy to the surface Causing the earth to shake This is called an earthquake

3 Primary effects Instant damages caused by the ground shaking Examples
Buildings collapsing Roads and bridges collapsing

4 Secondary Effects Secondary effects happen as a result of the primary effects Examples: landslides and avalanches tsunamis fires caused by broken gas pipes and electric cables diseases spreading easily as there is no fresh water famine as there is little food available Burst sewage pipes giant waves created by an earthquake on the sea floor which can damage coastal towns

5 Measuring an Earthquake
Seismometer measures an earthquake Measures the vibrations of the ground and how long it lasts Records the results on a graph called seismograph

222,500 people dies 300,000 injured 4,000 schools destroyed Secondary effects Cholera outbreaks (disease) Crops and farms destroyed

7 Procedure of an earthquake
Be calm Indoors: Get under a sturdy table, bed or desk Stay away from windows Stay away from outside walls Outdoors Find an open area Stay away from buildings, power lines or anything that can fall Stay in your car
