2 The Arrival: Book Four Begins
Charon ferries Dante and the souls across the Acheron to the first circle

3 Characters in Limbo Virgil- belongs to this circle of hell & guides Dante throughout his journey Great Poets of Classical Times (Homer, Horace, Ovid, Lucan)

4 Dante Awakens After fainting, Dante is awakened by thunder and notices that he is on the edge of a big well. Virgil tells him “let’s go down” and they arrive at the very top circle which is Limbo.

5 Limbo Virgil leads Dante into the first circle, Limbo, which contains the souls of those who lived without sin but died without baptism or Christianity. Here the innocents will remain forever with no hope of ever seeing God.

6 A Conversation with the Poets
Dante and Virgil join in conversation the great poets of the classical times: Homer, Horace, Ovid, and Lucan.

7 The Castle with Seven Walls
The poets lead them into a castle where on a green plain they meet the noblest of the heathens. Then they part from their company and continue their journey into the dark pits of Hell.
