2 Brainstorm problems in your community
What would you change? Brainstorm problems in your community

3 Problem based Learning Overview
P.B.L. Project Problem based Learning Overview

4 WHAT IS PROBLEM BASED LEARNING?
Problem Based Learning is driven by challenging, open-ended problems. Students work as self-directed problem-solvers in small collaborative groups. Students identify a problem and are asked to investigate and discover meaningful solutions to this problem.

5 WHY ARE WE DOING THIS? PROBLEM BASED LEARNING…
develops critical thinking and creative skills. improves your problem-solving skills. improves your ability to self motivate. helps you learn how to transfer knowledge to new situations.

6 WHAT YOU WILL DO… You and your group will brainstorm about different problems that you see in … THE WORLD YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD OR COMMUNITY YOUR SCHOOL YOUR CITY

7 WHAT YOU WILL DO… After we brainstorm in class, you will choose one issue that you would like to create a possible solution to. Make sure to pick an issue that you are truly interested in and care about. You will be placed in groups based on your interests, and your group will create a final problem that you will all work to solve.

8 HISTORICAL COMPONENT: MATHEMATICAL COMPONENT:
You will research the background behind your group’s problem. When was the issue at hand first tackled by others? What other solutions were proposed? Were the solutions successful? Why or why not? Create a brief timeline. MATHEMATICAL COMPONENT: Any data including statistics or demographics that will support the visualization of the problem and solution should be presented in the form of a graph or chart that clearly depicts your research. SCIENTIFIC COMPONENT: Explore the science and technology behind the issue and the solution. What is the science behind this problem(scientific studies)? What technology has been used to address the problem? What technology now and in the future can be applied to the problem? ELA COMPONENT: Your group will conduct research using credible sources, and you will learn how to correctly cite those sources. Each group will create a presentation that thoroughly explores the problem and the solution using the research done in each class.

9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WE DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH LAPTOPS! WHAT DO WE DO? Ideally, each group will have one laptop. If you would like to use your phone to conduct research, that is acceptable. However, all resources are used for the sole purpose of conducting research. There are consequences if you choose to do otherwise. I’M BORED AND HAVE NOTHING TO DO! WHAT CAN I DO NEXT? For extra credit you and your group can put your plan into action. Look carefully at your solution and decide what your next plan of action will be in order to implement your solution in your community or school.

10 Frequently Asked Questions:
WHAT IF I’M NOT IN A CLASSROOM WITH MY GROUP MEMBERS? Your group will have access to the group’s research notes through google docs. Each member will be able to edit the document no matter what class the members are currently in. WHAT IF WE CAN’T SOLVE THE PROBLEM? Each group will attempt to solve their problem; however, if the group is unable to create a plausible solution, that is understandable. Our team needs to see that you have used your time and resources wisely. We also need to see in your presentation that an attempt to solve the problem was made.
