2 The Beginning Co-Founders
Bonnie McElveen-Hunter- Chairman of the Board Melanie Sabelhaus- Vice Chair of Philanthropy Established January 2006 Over 800 members as of July 2018 In January 2006, Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, the Chairman of the American Red Cross, and Melanie Sabelhaus, the Vice Chairman of Philanthropy of the Board of Governors, introduced the Tiffany Circle to engage female philanthropists in the Red Cross Mission. Starting in 2006, several promising chapters were chosen to create Tiffany Circle pilot programs to create a community of women leader donors. All founding chapters survive today. The American Red Cross’s Tiffany Circle has grown to over 800 members and is the most successful individual annual fundraising initiative in Red Cross history. 4 Origin of the Name and Donation Level
Louis Comfort Tiffany Studio designed windows in the Board of Governors Hall (center window shown on left) Commissioned by Red Cross President Mabel Boardman in 1917 Paid for by equal donation: $5,000 gift from the Women’s Relief Corps of the North and $5,000 gift from the United Daughters of the Confederacy of the South The name “Tiffany Circle” was inspired by the Tiffany windows commissioned from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios and found in the Board of Governors Hall in the national headquarters for the American Red Cross in Washington D.C. These beautiful windows, the center panel shown here, embody the American Red Cross and Tiffany Circle Mission. The three images symbolize truth, hope, mercy, faith and humanitarianism even in the middle of battle, and heroic womanhood. Their century old-history joins the women of the United States’ North and South in giving aid to all peoples. This $10,000 gift level of the Tiffany Circle represents the sum of the $5000 gifts that each women’s group donated to commission the windows.

5 Who are Tiffany Circle Members? Why do they join?
To offer hope and be a part of something much greater than self. To be with like-minded women who are making a difference. To find the inspiration to become a better person. To serve as community ambassadors for the American Red Cross and spread the passion for the Red Cross humanitarian mission. Who are these wonderful women? Found all around the country, these women leaders share several qualities: They are: Highly engaged women business owners and community leaders actively involved in managing their family wealth and philanthropic decision-making. Informed and active decision makers who are network builders, ambassadors, community volunteers and moms who greatly influence family and friends. Caring voices of reason who understand the economic and emotional impact of crises on communities and also respond to help those in need.

6 Tiffany Circle Members Make a Lifesaving Difference

17 Does Gender Play a Role in Philanthropic Success?
So why is the Red Cross engaging women as major players to support our mission?

18 Women in Philanthropy Research demonstrates that gender differences occur in motivations; giving and volunteering; household charitable decision-making; and networks among other areas.* For example: Women are more likely than men to give to charity. Women are more likely to give and give more to every charitable subsector with a few exceptions. Women are more likely to volunteer and volunteer more hours than men. Marriage makes men more likely to give to charity and give higher amounts. In the United States, women control over half (60%) of private wealth and make 80% of all purchases. According to the Women’s Philanthropy Institute at Indiana University, women give more than their male counterparts. This is mostly true for the older generations but shows a trend in philanthropic giving. Among those who are in the top 25 percent of permanent income, baby boomer and older women (born before 1946) give 156 percent more than similarly-situated men. The University of Indiana's Women Give 2010 study showed that when other factors are equal, women across virtually all income levels are more likely to give and give more than men. It is shown that women give differently than men: Women want to see their money making a difference Women want a connection when they give Women like the personal connection 18 18 *Women’s Philanthropy Institute, Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2015

19 90% of giving from high wealth households is being driven by women
Bank of America Merrill Lynch partnered with Women’s Philanthropy Institute

20 Women as a “Market” “Women Drive Philanthropic Decisions in Wealthy Households, but Nonprofits Must Work for Their Trust, Finds Bank of America Merrill Lynch Study” “Women Exert New Influence on Philanthropy” Collective Giving: As more women give, they are likely to change not only what is funded but how they raise money because female philanthropists often prefer to raise money in a group. Over 46% of the nation’s wealth holders are women with a combined net worth of $6 trillion 90% of all purchases are made or controlled by women 83% of household incomes are managed by women Women-owned businesses are the fastest growing segment of the US economy 85% – 95% of women will inherit the nation’s wealth
