Warm up Take a look at the newspaper headline/article and answer the following questions as a journal: What do you notice first? What event is depicted here? What does this tell you about American feelings regarding Pearl Harbor? If you were alive during this time, how do you think you would feel about the attack on Pearl Harbor?  The term “Jap” is a derogatory term for someone of Japanese descent. Why do you think the editors chose to use this word? What does this choice tell you about American attitudes toward the Japanese?

Review The federal government became more involved in the lives of citizens and the distribution of goods during World War II. Civilians were rationed various goods, from groceries to gasoline and even materials such as rubber. The war changes lives of women and African-Americans Different jobs, social roles for women Fighting for equality, Executive Order 8802 for AAs

Background Info At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, there were about 119,000 people of Japanese ancestry living on the U.S West Coast. 2/3 were American Citizens. Following attack/declaration of war, animosity grew between the American public and those of Japanese descent

Govt response… Executive Order 9066
Authorized the removal of any or all people from military areas “as deemed necessary or desirable.” Military defined the entire West Coast as a military area

Internment camps 110,000 Japanese mass moved to these “Relocation centers” Comparable to prison Camps evolved; schools, social clubs/events were established

Korematsu vs U.s. Korematsu sues that Executive Order 9066 was unconstitutional Court upholds the executive order; states the “need to protect against espionage outweighed Korematsu’s rights” Sound familiar? However,  also declared that loyal citizens of the U.S, regardless of cultural descent, could not be detained without cause

End/aftermath In late 1944/early 1945, Japanese- Americans begin leaving camps to return to their homes/lives Many had to start over 1988- U.S. govt realizes the mistakes, begins paying reparations to surviving detainees 1998- $1.6 billion had been given
