2 Please Meat the truth

3 Is eating meat sustainable?
Like it or not, meat-eating has become a huge problem for everyone on the planet. The only reason people eat meat and animal products is for taste. Unfortunately, satisfaction of taste for meat is destroying us!

4 How bad is it?

5

6 animals have been killed for food in 2018 in the US
2018 U.S. ANIMAL KILL CLOCK 55,148,980,000 animals have been killed for food in 2018 in the US Chickens: 8.8 Billion Fish: 3.8 Billion Turkeys: 235 Million Cattle: 29 Million Pigs: 115 Million Ducks: 28 Million Sheep: 2,3 Million

7 Factory Farms

8 Factory farms: animals are crammed by the thousands into filthy, windowless sheds and stuffed into cages. These animals will never raise their families, play, build nests, or do anything that is natural and important to them. Most animals will never see the sun or breathe fresh air until the day they’re loaded onto trucks headed for slaughterhouses.

9 Fish Farms

10 According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 32% of world fish stocks are overexploited. These farms can severely damage ecosystems by introducing diseases, pollutants. Fish farms often depend on small wild fish, like anchovies, in order to feed the larger species. It can take up to five lb. of smaller fish to produce one lb. of salmon or sea bass. Overfishing of these smaller “forage” fish has repercussions throughout the ocean ecosystem.

11 Fish “live” in unnaturally crowded conditions.
Suffer from lesions, fin damage and other injuries. These cause disease and parasite outbreaks—such as sea lice—that farmers treat with pesticides and antibiotics. The use of antibiotics create drug-resistant strains of diseases that can harm wildlife populations and even humans that eat the farmed fish.

12 Artificial Insemination: Due to genetic manipulation, humans have bred domestic turkeys into deformed beings who can no longer reproduce naturally, resulting in a cruel system of forced masturbation of male turkeys and rape of female birds.

13 Fur and Anal Electrocution
In Canada, over 3 million animals are killed each year for their fur. Fur farmers anally electrocute animals so they won’t damage the pelts.

14 Pus: 5 million pus cells per cup!

15 Dairy products are produced by impregnating cows, and then collecting the milk that is intended for their calves. Calves are formula-fed; males are used for veal, which means they are slaughtered very young, some as early as a few days old. A cow’s natural lifespan is about 25 years. “Spent” dairy cows are killed at about 4-5 years old. Milk is a bodily secretion of cow.

16 Got eggs?

17 EACH DAY in the US, 700,000 male chicks are tossed into the giant grinders or gassed.
Why?!

18 Eggs Farms acquire egg-laying hens from chick “factories” where male chicks, are killed by drowning or suffocation. A chicken’s lifespan is about 6-12 years. The egg production of egg-laying hens peaks at about 2-3 years, In other words, when we eat eggs, we contribute to the early death of chickens.

19 Don’t we need meat to survive? The science of eating meat

20 The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer concluded that consumption of meat causes cancer. The China Study concluded that people who eat meat run the risk of developing numerous diseases. A 2014 Harvard study concluded that one serving a day of red meat during adolescence was associated with a 22% higher risk of pre-menopausal breast cancer, and in adulthood 13%.

21 Meat eaters are 3 times more likely to be obese than vegetarians, and 9 times more likely than vegans. According JAMA Internal Medicine, vegetarians may live longer than meat eaters. National Research Council: The U.S., ‘‘where meat is consumed at more than three times the global average’’ is one of the sickest nations in the world.

22 Position of the American Dietetic Association: vegetarian diets
“It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.

23

24 The number of animals is high because humans bring them into existence artificially.
According to The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, A meat diets requires 17 times more land, 14 times more water and 10 times more energy than a vegetarian diets. This is because we use the world’s land for growing crops to feed livestock, rather than humans. In 50 years, the UN predicts there will be 10.5 billion people on the planet (currently around 7 billion). To 10 billion people, we will need to grow food more sustainably. Dr. Willett, professor of medicine at Harvard University says we could eliminate the worst cases of world hunger today with about 40 million tons of food – yet 760 million tons is fed to animals on farms every year.

25 Since the world’s population is growing rapidly… The only way to feed all, if we continue to eat meat at the same rate, is to clear more forest. In Central America, 40% of all the rainforests have been cleared or burned down in the last 40 years, for cattle pasture. The Center for International Forestry Research reports that rapid growth in the sales of Brazilian beef has led to accelerated destruction of the Amazon rainforest.

26 Fresh water. If we break it down species by species, the heaviest water use is by the animals we raise for meat. The standard diet in the US requires 4,200 gallons of water per day. On a vegan diet only 300 gallons a day.

27 Waste disposal. Rivers carrying livestock waste are dumping so much excess soil into bays and gulfs that large areas of the marine world are dying. The easiest way to reduce water pollution is to eat less meat. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, In the US, factory farms generate more than 130 times the amount of waste that people do. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, livestock waste has polluted more than 27,000 miles of rivers and contaminated groundwater in dozens of states.

28 Energy consumption. It takes the equivalent of a gallon of gasoline to produce a pound of grain-fed beef in the US. To provide the yearly average beef consumption of an American family of four, it requires over 260 gallons of fossil fuel. Today, more than 70% of the grain produced in the United States is fed to livestock. “Feeding grain to animals is highly inefficient, and an absurd use of resources” says Vaclav Smil of University of Manitoba.

29 Global warming. Burning carbon-rich fuels emits carbon dioxide
Global warming. Burning carbon-rich fuels emits carbon dioxide. Livestock emit global-warming gases directly, as a by-product of digestion. Pete Hodgson, New Zealand Minister for Energy, Science, and Fisheries says that 1 ton of methane has the global warming potential of 23 tons of carbon dioxide. A dairy cow produces about 75 kilograms of methane a year, equivalent to over 1.5 metric tons of carbon dioxide. To fight Global Warming, we must reduce the number of animals (Hopefully not eat animals at all!)

30 Food productivity. According to Patricia Muir of Oregon State University, when you feed 20,000 kcal of corn to cattle, the cattle will produce about 2,000 kcal of usable energy from it. That 2,000 kcal of beef would support one person for a day. If instead people ate the 20,000 kcal of corn directly, instead of passing it through the cow, we would be able to support more people for that given unit of land being farmed. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Census of Agriculture, While 56 million acres of US land are producing hay for livestock, only 4 million acres are producing vegetables for human consumption.

31 Eating Meat Not Eating Meat Unnecessary animal cruelty No animal cruelty Unhealthful/dangerous for our health Healthful/Optimal Unsustainable Solutions because Sustainable Water waste Not waste Water pollution No water pollution Inefficient energy consumption Very efficient energy consumption Global warming No global warming Waste of land Sustainable because efficient use of land Destruction of forests No burning down forests required

32 What’s your excuse?

33 Price: Being Vegetarian is too expensive!
A new study published in the Journal of Hunger & Environmental Nutrition found that eating a vegetarian diet is cheaper than a meat-based one. Confusion about food. Processed food is expensive—not corn, potatoes, beans, lentils, rice, soy, oranges, broccoli, etc.

34 Broccoli $1.64 per head Bagged spinach $2 per 9-ounce bag Russet potatoes $0.56 per pound Sweet potatoes $0.92 a pound Carrots $0.74 per pound Green cabbage $0.58 per pound Butternut squash $1 a pound Brown rice $2 a pound Oatmeal $2 a pound Canned beans less than $1 a pound Dried lentils $1.39 a pound Quinoa $3 a pound Bananas $0.60 a pound Oranges $1 a pound Apples $1.60 a pound Cantaloupe $0.50 a pound Kiwis $2 a pound And the list goes on…

35 Religion Which one? Religious texts do not order you to eat meat.
Religion as a whole teaches love and compassion. Killing animals for food while destroying the environment is neither. I can’t imagine any god suggesting that with the abundance of food we have we need factory farming! Bible: “And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.” (Gen. 1:29–31) Quran : “There is not an animal that lives on the earth, nor a being that flies on its wings, but they form communities like you. Nothing have we omitted from the Book, and they all shall be gathered to their Lord in the end" (Quran 6:38).

36 Humans have been eating meat for millions of years
Historically false. Meat is a luxury. How much meat did humans eat before factory farming? Most importantly: in affluent societies, we do not eat meat to survive, but for pleasure. Humans have been doing lots of things for millennia, but they are not moral: Discrimination, slavery, war...

37 We’re on top of the food chain
What does this exactly mean? Who established that? Assume this is true, just because we are, does it mean we have to eat animals?

38 Our bodies have evolved to eat meat?
Our bodies are evolved to be evil. To go to war. To fight. Wisdom Teeth Tonsils

39 Meat has proteins What do cows, rhinoceroses, gorillas, and elephants eat?

40 There are 20 amino acids, out of which 9 are essential:
1. Leucine. seaweed, pumpkin, peas, rice, sesame seeds, watercress, turnip greens, soy, sunflower seeds, kidney beans, figs, avocados, raisins, dates, apples, blueberries, olives, bananas. 2. Asoleucine. rye, soy, cashews, almonds, oats, lentils, beans, brown rice, cabbage, hemp seeds, chia seeds, spinach, pumpkin, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, cranberries, quinoa, blueberries, apples, kiwis. 3. Lysine. beans (again), watercress, hemp seeds, chia seeds, spirulina, parsley, avocados, almonds, cashews, lentils, chickpeas.

41 4. Methionine. sunflower seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, Brazil nuts, oats, seaweed, pasta, figs, rice, beans, legumes, onions, raisins. 5. Phenylalanine. spirulina and other seaweed, pumpkin, beans, rice, avocado, almonds, peanuts, quinoa, figs, raisins, leafy greens, most berries, olives. 6. Threonine. watercress and spirulina (exceeding meat), pumpkin, leafy greens, hemp seeds, chia seeds, soybeans, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, avocados, figs, raisins, quinoa, and wheat, sprouted grains.

42 7. Tryptopan. oats, seaweed, hemp seeds, chia seeds, spinach, watercress, soybeans, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, parsley, beans, beats, asparagus, mushrooms, lettuces, leafy greens, beans, avocado, figs, winter squash, celery, peppers, carrots, chickpeas, onions, apples, oranges, bananas, quinoa, lentils, peas. 8. Valine. beans, spinach, legumes, broccoli, sesame seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, soy, peanuts, whole grains, figs, avocado, apples, blueberries, cranberries, oranges, and apricots. 9. Histidine. rice, pasta, rye, seaweed, beans, legumes, cantaloupe, hemp seeds, chia seeds, buckwheat, potatoes, cauliflower, corn.

43 Vegetarians have lower B12
Cows, rhinoceroses, gorillas, elephants don’t eat meat. From where do they get B12? Why do they produce B12 supplements?

44 Animals eat other animals, so why shouldn’t we?
The short answer: We have options in the way of food and in the way of morality.

45 Animals can’t reason like us so they don’t deserve the same treatment.
Since when we treat individuals on the basis of their mental capacities? Do we use orphan babies, the senile, irreversible comas for food or medical research?

46 What I eat is a personal choice! Don’t judge me and I won’t judge you!
First of all, you are making a moral judgment with your statement: “Don’t judge.” Secondly, if something is morally questionable, you cannot brush it off by saying that it is your personal choice. Using animals for food has a negative impact on the environment, it creates unhealthy people, it continues to teach people that cruelty toward animals is permissible on the basis of satisfying taste. What we eat is not just a personal choice because it affects others!
