April 2007 doc.: IEEE /0570r0 September 2008 Proposed Modifications to VHT60 PAR Date: Authors: Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

2 April 2007 doc.: IEEE /0570r0 September 2008 Abstract Proposed modifications to VHT60 PAR based on Executive Committee discussions R1: updated project dates in 7.1 R2: updated with review from VHT60 Aug 21 call and Sept 3 EC call; new wording R3: updated scope based on Sept VHT60 discussion Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

3 EC Discussion following Denver EC meeting
September 2008 EC Discussion following Denver EC meeting Bruce Kraemer, Bob Heile, Paul Nikolich and Steve Shellhammer held a conference call on July 24 to discuss a path forward for the VHT60 PAR Proposed modifications to VHT60 PAR A stronger declaration of coexistence with c in the Scope of the PAR. Possible wording that could be used is the wording used in the motion to amend during the closing EC meeting, Replace the text "Addresses coexistence with other wireless systems" with the text "Ensure coexistence with IEEE c.“ Adding a definition of coexistence in the Additional Notes section. One possible definition is the definition in , which was approved by both the and working groups. Adding c and ECMA TC48 to section 7.1 (Projects will similar scope) of the PAR Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

4 Subsequent EC discussion on “ensure coexistence”
September 2008 Subsequent EC discussion on “ensure coexistence” “It has been brought up by several people that the term "ensure" is almost a synonym for "guarantee" which was not the intention.” New VHT60 scope wording proposal by Steve Shellhammer Supports mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

5 Old Proposed Changes to PAR (1/2)
September 2008 Old Proposed Changes to PAR (1/2) 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard: The scope of this project is to define an amendment that shall define standardized modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically GHz) capable of very high throughput. The MAC and PHY specified in this amendment: Enables a maximum throughput of at least 1 Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Enables fast session transfer between PHYs Maintains the user experience Supports mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c Addresses coexistence and with other systems in the band Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

6 Proposed Changes to PAR (2/2)
September 2008 Proposed Changes to PAR (2/2) 7.1 Are there other standards or projects with a similar scope? No Yes Explanation: There are 60 GHz PHY projects in c and ECMA TC48 Sponsor Organization: IEEE 802 Project/Standard Number: IEEE c Project/Standard Date: (projected date) Project/Standard Title: Part 15.3: Wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications for High Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs): Amendment 2: Millimeter-wave based Alternative Physical Layer Extension Sponsor Organization: ECMA Project/Standard Number: TC48 60 GHz Project/Standard Date: (projected date) Project/Standard Title: PHY and MAC layers for 60 GHz wireless network Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

7 Review of VHT60 Aug 21 conference call
September 2008 Review of VHT60 Aug 21 conference call Reviewed all proposed permutations of coexistence scope statement from Aug 20 joint conference call with c Ran electronic strawpolls (results in brackets, 20 participants total) SP1 Preferred wording for coexistence in VHT60 PAR scope, choose one or more Addresses coexistence with other systems in the band (5) Ensure coexistence with IEEE c (1) Supports mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (7) Includes mandatory mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (11) Provides mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (12) Mandates mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (7) SP2 Should similar coexistence language be added to the c PAR scope? Yes (17) No (1) Abs (2) updated project dates in 7.1 Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

8 Review of Sept 3 EC call on VHT60
September 2008 Review of Sept 3 EC call on VHT60 Discussion items New scope wording based on VHT60 straw poll option with most vote “Provides mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band” chair was supportive No objections were raised to the wording by EC members on the call Adding symmetrical coexistence wording to c PAR Objection from one member of Timeline of c raised as concern If recirculation letter ballot goes well, could go to sponsor ballot in November Definition of coexistence EC suggested including in PAR (common) 802 definition for coexistence Could use definition, “The ability of one system to perform a task in a given shared environment where other systems have an ability to perform their tasks and may or may not be using the same set of rules.” Reference definition in VHT60 PAR Description of “shared environment” High level definition of shared environment requested Would be used in order to determine whether coexistence was achieved Discussion on level of detail necessary in a PAR/5C’s VHT60 should add description of environment in 5C’s New work items for VHT60 Description of environment Slide 8 Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

9 Proposed Changes to Scope from Aug 21
September 2008 Proposed Changes to Scope from Aug 21 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard: The scope of this project is to define an amendment that shall define standardized modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically GHz) capable of very high throughput. The MAC and PHY specified in this amendment: Enables a maximum throughput of at least 1 Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Enables fast session transfer between PHYs Maintains the user experience Provides mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c Addresses coexistence and with other systems in the band Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

10 Strawpoll in VHTSG on Sept 9 2008
September 2008 Strawpoll in VHTSG on Sept Strawpoll (choose one or more) The MAC and PHY specified in this amendment: Provides mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (0) Provides mechanisms that enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (0) Provides mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the band including IEEE c systems (24) Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

11 New Proposed Changes to Scope
September 2008 New Proposed Changes to Scope 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard: The scope of this project is to define an This amendment that shall defines standardized modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically GHz) capable of very high throughput. The MAC and PHY specified in this amendment: Enables a maximum throughput of at least 1 Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Enables fast session transfer between PHYs Maintains the user experience Provides mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the band including IEEE c systems Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

12 Further Coexistence modifications
September 2008 Further Coexistence modifications Request from EC during Sept 3rd call to provide definition of coexistence and description of environment Modify (Coexistence of 802 wireless standards specifying devices for unlicensed operation) Reference definition: “The ability of one system to perform a task in a given shared environment where other systems have an ability to perform their tasks and may or may not be using the same set of rules.” Environment description: 60 GHz band in home and enterprise Proposal: Coexistence of 802 wireless standards specifying devices for unlicensed operation The working group will create a CA document as part of the WG balloting process. The definition for coexistence is as defined in , with the environment being 60 GHz band in home and enterprise Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
