2 Overview Initial presentation to the EC in July 2008
April 2007 doc.: IEEE /0570r0 November 2008 Overview Initial presentation to the EC in July 2008 Details here in provide an update to the VHT60 PAR since the EC meeting in July 2008 in Denver Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

3 November 2008 Summary of Updates Several joint calls/meetings with c since July Strong support for new coexistence wording based on strawpoll (85-0-2) in joint meeting between VHT60 and c, Monday Sept 8th Key updates made to four sections since July: 5.2 PAR Scope – new coexistence wording 7.1 – reference c and ECMA TC48 – definition for coexistence and environment 8.1 - addition of response to comment to add PICS statement Next four slides show these changes in red No objections raised in subsequent EC call on Oct 24 or on reflector This resolves all concerns of c, WGs, and EC members to date Link to PAR and 5Cs Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

4 November 2008 Update to PAR Scope 5.2 Scope of Proposed Standard: This amendment defines standardized modifications to both the physical layers (PHY) and the Medium Access Control Layer (MAC) to enable operation in the 60 GHz frequency band (typically GHz) capable of very high throughput. The MAC and PHY specified in this amendment: Enables a maximum throughput of at least 1 Gbps, as measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP) Enables fast session transfer between PHYs Maintains the user experience Provides mechanisms that enable coexistence with other systems in the band including IEEE c systems Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

5 November 2008 Update to 7.1 7.1 Are there other standards or projects with a similar scope? Yes Explanation: There are 60 GHz PHY projects in c and ECMA TC48 Sponsor Organization: IEEE 802 Project/Standard Number: IEEE c Project/Standard Date: (projected date) Project/Standard Title: Part 15.3: Wireless Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) Specifications for High Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs): Amendment 2: Millimeter-wave based Alternative Physical Layer Extension Sponsor Organization: ECMA Project/Standard Number: TC48 60 GHz Project/Standard Date: (projected date) Project/Standard Title: PHY and MAC layers for 60 GHz wireless network Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

6 November 2008 Update to Coexistence of 802 wireless standards specifying devices for unlicensed operation The working group will create a CA document as part of the WG balloting process. The definition for coexistence is as defined in , with the shared environment being the 60 GHz band in home and enterprise. Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

7 Update to 8.1 8.1 Additional Explanatory Notes:
November 2008 Update to 8.1 8.1 Additional Explanatory Notes: 1.1) this is an amendment to the then current revision of the IEEE standard , which will include a PICS proforma Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

9 Update Since July EC meeting
November 2008 Update Since July EC meeting Bruce Kraemer, Bob Heile, Paul Nikolich and Steve Shellhammer held a conference call on July 24 Joint conference call with c on Aug 20 to discuss VHT60 PAR VHT60 conference call on Aug 21 to discuss outcome of joint call EC call on VHT60 on Sept 3 VHT60 and joint meetings with c in September in Waikoloa EC call on Oct 24 to discuss VHT60 Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

10 EC Discussion following July Denver EC meeting
November 2008 EC Discussion following July Denver EC meeting Bruce Kraemer, Bob Heile, Paul Nikolich and Steve Shellhammer held a conference call on July 24 to discuss a path forward for the VHT60 PAR Proposed modifications to VHT60 PAR A stronger declaration of coexistence with c in the Scope of the PAR. Possible wording that could be used is the wording used in the motion to amend during the closing EC meeting, Replace the text "Addresses coexistence with other wireless systems" with the text "Ensure coexistence with IEEE c.“ Adding a definition of coexistence in the Additional Notes section. One possible definition is the definition in , which was approved by both the and working groups. Adding c and ECMA TC48 to section 7.1 (Projects will similar scope) of the PAR “It has been brought up by several people that the term "ensure" is almost a synonym for "guarantee" which was not the intention.” New VHT60 scope wording proposal by Steve Shellhammer Supports mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

11 Review of VHT60 Aug 20 joint conference call with 802.15.3c
November 2008 Review of VHT60 Aug 20 joint conference call with c Discussion on replacing coexistence scope statement with “Supports mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band” Several proposed permutations of wording Added c and ECMA TC48 to Section 7.1 (Are there other standards or projects with a similar scope?) Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

12 Review of VHT60 Aug 21 conference call
November 2008 Review of VHT60 Aug 21 conference call Reviewed all proposed permutations of coexistence scope statement from Aug 20 joint conference call with c Ran electronic strawpolls (results in brackets, 20 participants total) SP1 Preferred wording for coexistence in VHT60 PAR scope, choose one or more Addresses coexistence with other systems in the band (5) Ensure coexistence with IEEE c (1) Supports mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (7) Includes mandatory mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (11) Provides mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (12) Mandates mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band (7) SP2 Should similar coexistence language be added to the c PAR scope? Yes (17) No (1) Abs (2) Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation

13 Review of Sept 3 EC call on VHT60
November 2008 Review of Sept 3 EC call on VHT60 Discussion items New scope wording based on VHT60 straw poll option with most vote “Provides mechanisms to enable coexistence with IEEE c and with other systems in the band” chair was supportive No objections were raised to the wording by EC members on the call Adding symmetrical coexistence wording to c PAR Objection from one member of Timeline of c raised as concern If recirculation letter ballot goes well, could go to sponsor ballot in November Definition of coexistence EC suggested including in PAR (common) 802 definition for coexistence Could use definition, “The ability of one system to perform a task in a given shared environment where other systems have an ability to perform their tasks and may or may not be using the same set of rules.” Reference definition in VHT60 PAR Description of “shared environment” High level definition of shared environment requested Would be used in order to determine whether coexistence was achieved Discussion on level of detail necessary in a PAR/5C’s VHT60 should add description of environment in 5C’s New work items for VHT60 Description of environment Slide 13 Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation Eldad Perahia, Intel Corporation
