Class Discussion: Did You Know? Brazil’s name comes from the tree named brazilwood. This is the premier wood for making bows for stringed instruments. Class Discussion Ask students what the name “Rio de Janeiro” might mean. (River of January; it was so named because the first explorers came to the harbor in January and mistakenly thought it was the mouth of a river.)
